There is an excellent article by Dr. H-Dirkson L. Bauman on Audism. http://jdsde.oxfordjournals.org/content/9/2/239.full.pdf+html
National Association of the Deaf (NAD) did an excellent vlog on “Audism” as well. The word “Audism” should be inserted in dictionaries. http://www.nad.org/news/2010/4/nad-urges-dictionaries-recognize-%E2%80%9Caudism%E2%80%9D

Why not re-name it Aaaaaudism ? that would ensure it is the first word anyone will read in the dictionary… the correct spelling is D-I-S-C-R-I-M-I-N-A-T-I-O-N.

MM, that is not the whole story and it is justified when that term are used in various publications. I do agree that most people are taking the “audism” thing too far; however, the word “audism” has merit.

Depends how you view discriminations, is it worse if applied to a deaf person ? Or ‘special’ ? It just is… I’ve read very very few blogs about deaf suffering ‘audism’ that actually WAS discrimination, in that the person was targeted because he or she was deaf. Most who target deaf people do so on the grounds og intolerance to those with poor mental health, the ‘retards’ Many associate deafness with MH issues, every term applied negatively is about that. ‘Dumb’ etc… When I attended a seminar on awareness last year there were disabled and deaf people there, they were asked to write down how many and what types of names they got called, there were about 40 ! 36 of them were about mental illness regardless if you were deaf/blind or whatever, it is that perception… The first and most response when a hearing ignoramus approaches the deaf is that our ‘poor communication’ or answering questions with unrelated answers etc… is down to being plain stupid. They rarely associate it with the fact you didn’t hear the question asked, double jeopardy if you can speak well, you invite assault. I think bullies are the ultimate democracy frankly, they will abuse ANYONE.

MM, in the academic sector, this term “Audism” is a definition of what had taken place. It is not racial, sexual, or physical discrimination, nevertheless, auditory supremacy that promotes some form of discrimination. Once the public asks, “what kind of discrimination does the Deaf people experienced?” Audism would be a perfect fit for this definition and there are groups that are taking advantage of this “Audism” word to oppress another Deaf person. This is not something to dismiss because the ‘Audism” word is now moving towards the ranks of academics also found the value of this word which will be inserted in the dictionary in the near future. We need to steer away from the small groups that are using the “Audism” word as a weapon to suppress an argument which is not what it is in the first place.
